AF Rounding Rules

If you're here, you want to learn how we Judges round our calculations. I'll do my best to explain it to you, so let's go!

As you know, we round things to the nearest half—that's .0 or .5. Here's how we decide which to round to:

Rounding Diagram

Examples:

15 ÷ 4 = 3.75

You want only a single decimal place (the tenths place), so first we have to get rid of the 5 in the hundreths place. We round normally, so that 3.75 rounds to 3.8.

Then, 3.8 rounds up to 4.0 using AF rounding rules.

So, an Angel with 15 attack does 4 damage.

14 ÷ 6 = 2.33333...(repeating)

We have to get rid of the repeating threes. As per normal rounding rules, since we want to get to the tenths place, we only look at the place next to it—that's the hundreths place. So we only look at "2.33" and we ignore all those other 3s.

We round to the tenths place, so that 2.33 rounds down to 2.3.

Now that we've just got the tenths place, we can use AF rounding rules. Therefore, 2.3 rounds up to 2.5.

So, an Angel with 14 defense blocks 2.5 damage.

The Short Version:

When the answer is not obviously apparent, use normal rounding rules to get to a number with a decimal in the tenths place ONLY. Then, use AF rounding rules to get to .0 or .5.

Reminder: NDS does not follow AF rounding rules. It only uses regular rounding rules.

I know this looks a little confusing. But if you go slowly and think carefully, you'll see that it isn't as hard as it may at first appear. And the more you do it, the more used to it you'll get, until you can do it like a pro! ^^

Have fun rounding~
