Setting

Angel Fall takes place three years after the events in the Angelic Layer manga and anime, but one year before Chobits. (For more details, click here.) Since then, the Terrain Layers have been retired and revived again, and the Team Battle Division has come and gone. The AAMS Chip has been developed, which gives Angels the ability to move outside the Layer, talk, and think for themselves.

Angel Fall is set in Odaiba, an area of Tokyo, Japan. For more information on Odaiba, click here (most informative page, but engrishy), here, or here.  For a map of Odaiba, click here.

More specifically, almost everything that happens on the RP takes place in the Piffle Princess. To see maps of the Piffle Princess, click here. Across the street from the Piffle Princess is Sakurairo Park (also known as simply "The Park"), which is laden with cherry blossom trees. It also has a duck pond.

Angel Types and the Four Stats

The RPG is based on four stats:

Speed
How fast your Angel moves. Helps you dodge attacks and launch attacks before your opponent reacts.
Speed-type Angels specialize in this stat.

Attack
Your Angel's strength.  Applies to how hard they hit, how much they can lift and/or throw, and how strongly they can push or pull other Angels or objects.
Power-type Angels specialize in this stat.

Defense
How well your Angel can block hits.
Defense-type Angels specialize in this stat.

HP (Hit Points)
Your Angel's life meter.  When your Angel reaches 0 HP, s/he is knocked out and you lose.
Endurance-type Angels specialize in this stat.

All stats start at 10 points, but depending on your Angel type, you get two extra points in your stat specialization. For example, an Endurance-type Angel would have 12 points in her HP, not 10.

** The stat you specialize in must always be higher than any other stat by at least two points! **

Need help picking an Angel type? Well, it just so happens there's a quiz to help you make that decision. Take the quiz here.

When you win a battle you receive points that raise your stats. The Judge of your battle decides how many points to award the battle's participants, depending on its difficulty. The loser receives less points than the winner. You don't lose points when you lose a battle.

Spread out your points as you wish. You can either put them all in one stat, or spread them evenly. Be sure to post how you'd like to distribute your stats in the Profile Updates thread, located in the OOC Board, so the Judges can update your stats for you.

Judges are the administrators and moderators of the site.  You can't battle without a Judge presiding—except in the Practice Layers. Judges make sure the battle runs smoothly and stays fair. They also calculate HP counts, so you don't have to!

The Battle System

Battles are turn-based; you're allowed one attack and one defensive motion (or two defensive motions) per post. Then you must wait until your opponent replies before you may make another motion.

Strength

To know your strength, divide your attack by 4.

Example: 10 attack ÷ 4 = 2.5 damage dealt.

Defense

Blocking nullifies some damage. When you divide your defense stat by 6, the resulting number is how much damage you block from going through.

Example: 10 defense ÷ 6 = 1.5 damage blocked.

If you don't block, all damage does through. Dodging does NOT count as blocking.

Natural Defense System (NDS)

Defense-type Angels have a Natural Defense System which allows them to naturally block damage when hit. When a defense-type Angel is hit, divide their defense stat by 80 to see how much is blocked.

Example: 12 ÷ 80 = 0.15 damage blocked (round to two decimal places!)

When a defense Angel blocks, their Natural Defense System doesn't activate.

Example: 12 ÷ 6 = 2 damage blocked, *not 2.15.*

Speed

Speed is a pure RP stat, and—obviously—determines how quickly you move, dodge, and attack.  However, it doesn't affect how much damage you deal or block.

Use your head here; the Judges are watching. It's better to underplay rather than overplay your Angel's speed.

Rounding

Round all calculations to .0 or .5. The way in which we round damage dealt/damage blocked calculations here on Angel Fall is confusing; therefore I don't really bother explaining it in detail any more...but for those of you who are curious, click here. This is the way we Judges calculate your damage dealt/damage blocked calculations, and I suppose it's handy to know if you want to double-check our calculations.

The only exception is NDS, which rounds to two decimal places with no limitations. (ex: 15 defense ÷ 80 = 0.1875 = 0.19.  Don't round any more!  Do not round up to 0.20!)

In-Time and Out-of-Time Areas

"In-Time" areas are called such because the RP's timeline unfolds here. These are RPing areas, and you're expected to stay in-character when posting. The Piffle Princess, Angel Layers, Practice Layers, Café, Tournaments, and Storylines boards are all in-time.

The only restriction to in-time areas is that you are only allowed one Angel Layer and one Practice Layer battle at any given time. In other words, you can't have two Angel Layer battles, and you can't have two Practice Layer battles. Reply to your joining application with the phrase angel flight. Everywhere else, you can be in as many threads as you want. Just make sure you don't take too many! Threads can be time-conusming—especially on the Storylines board—and it's not fair to make other Deuses wait up for you.

"Out-of-Time" areas are non-RPing areas where you are allowed to speak freely out-of-character. Everywhere else is out-of-time: the OOC Board, Technique Board, Convention Meets, and Fanfiction.

Judges are exempt from the Angel Layer rules regarding judging battles, so don't be surprised when you see a single Judge overseeing many battles at once.

Angelic Layer Membership Card

Want to buy stuff? Good! Battles also gain you points on your Angelic Layer Membership Card (ALCard).  You get stat and ALCard points in the Angel Layers (ex: if the Judge awards you four points, you now have 4 ALCard and 4 stat points to play with).  In the Practice Layers, you only get ALCard points.  With these points, you can buy stuff for your Angel in the Piffle Princess Store.

Clarification Notes

Angel Fall is an RPG that constantly changes.  Therefore, these small notes or rules have come up, and I would kindly ask that everyone abide by them:

  1. PLEASE, don't mess with circuitry during your battles!  Only Judge-controlled NPCs can destroy circuits.

  2. No Layer Outs, unless it is agreed upon by both Deuses.  Layer Outs are considered powergaming.

  3. When in doubt, ask.  Ask either other members (on the OOC Board) or one of the Judges (either on the OOC Board or by asking us directly via PM, email, or IM service) if you're not sure of something.

  4. If you want a Supporting Cast NPC, you'll have to clear it with the Judges first.  Just drop us a line telling us why you want the NPC, and if we think it's worth it, we'll give it to you.  (The best way to get an NPC is if you have a good storyline for your character and you need an NPC for it.)

  5. On that note, if you want to implement a storyline you have to clear it with the Judges first, too.  *nod nod*

  6. All Deuses are allowed to (and encouraged!) to control the Piffle Princess Clerk, Waitress, and Waiter.  They may not control any other NPC without special permission.

  7. If your Angel battles in the Layers without you, you receive no points whatsoever.

  8. A few notes on Angels:

    • They cannot eat or drink.  Doing so would damage their internal circuitry immensely.
    • They cannot cry, blush, or sweat.
    • They do not need to breathe to survive, although they do need it in order to talk.
    • They never "shut down" or "turn off," although they can if they wish go into a "sleep" mode. (Yes, this is a plot hole.  No, I'm never going to fix it.)
    • Angels can, if they push hard enough, gain access to all of their Deus's memories and thoughts.  A Deus can do the same for an Angel.  However, out of politeness and love, usually this does not happen.
    • Angels are water-resistant, not waterproof. They can handle being underwater for about seven minutes before they start to fry; and if they open their mouths underwater, the water gets in and they're essentially done for.
  9. If all the Judges unanimously vote to ban a Deus, s/he may be banned without warning.  This sounds mean and dictatorial, but it only happens in extreme circumstances.  Normal Deuses will never need to worry about this.

  10. A squeeze in battle inflicts blocked damage.

  11. A "half-block" blocks half of what your defense stat would normally decree; for example, an Angel with 10 defense would half-block 0.75 damage instead of his usual 1.5.  Half-blocks are when you almost manage to block a hit, but not entirely, so some damage still goes through.

  12. If an attack is two-pronged, or a character is hit and then takes an uncontrolled fall, or something of this nature, it only counts as one hit.

  13. If an attack is met with another countering attack (for example, if a kick is met with a punch to the attacking foot), it counts as one full hit to each Angel.

  14. Biting inflicts half damage. That's half, not blocked.

When more things come up, they'll show up here.

General Rules
Follow these and everybody's happy.
  1. POST FREQUENTLY! I don't even have internet at home and I post a lot, so you can find the time, too. Please make at least make ONE post every time you go online to help keep the RPG moving. If you don't think you can post at least ONCE A MONTH, please don't join. Also, there are activity threads that you're required to post in to keep your Angel Fall membership (found in the OOC Board). These threads take place at the beginning of every month, and I don't send out emails announcing them.

  2. No Advertising. I don't care how great your whatever-you're-advertising is. If you advertise on AF, I'll ban you and delete the offending post. If you would like to affiliate with AF, please contact the Judges through PM or e-mail.

  3. No Powergaming. Powergaming is attacking more than once in one post, performing uber-powerful attacks (that your Angel isn't capable of doing), or speaking for or controlling another Angel, Deus, or NPC (without permission). Do not do this. Powergaming's one of my biggest pet peeves. Do it once, and I'll warn you. Twice, and I kick you off Angel Fall.

Note that "Breaking the laws of physics" is not counted on the list of "What is powergaming."  If your Angel's move is physically impossible to perform, you will be asked to repost, but you won't be penalized.  Hey, everybody makes mistakes.

  4. Be Descriptive. Basically, no one-word posts or posts like "I kick you." "Role-Playing" means that you get into it; pretend you're writing a story with you as the main character, if you wish.

  5. Stay In Character. If you want to talk Out Of Character (OOC), mark it with this: OOC:. Talking OOC are situations where you're talking to another person facing a computer screen, not a character in the RPG itself. And there's also the OOC Board.

  6. Be Nice. "Do unto others as you would have done unto you." Don't be evil, don't beat up the lower-stat Angels, don't try to be a control freak, don't be a brat, don't brag, etc. And for goodness's sake, DO NOT insult, harass, or otherwise abuse the Judges via the forum/PMs, IMs, or e-mails. Just don't. We work hard for you, and all we ask for in return is your respect. Just go with the flow, and all will be well.

  7. Follow the Rules. Duh.

    and lastly:

  8. Have fun! ^-^
